MapSource is discontinued Windows mapping software from Garmin for viewing maps, waypoints, routes and tracks, and transferring them to or from compatible Garmin GPS devices. It was distributed with some Garmin GPS devices and Garmin map products.
The final MapSource release is version 6.16.3, released on 25 October 2010. Garmin continues to make this version available for download, but MapSource is no longer under active development.
MapSource runs on Windows. It may also run on Linux using Wine; see Wine MapSource.
Garmin identifies BaseCamp as the successor to MapSource for most supported devices. BaseCamp handles waypoints, routes, tracks and compatible Garmin map products, but its workflow differs from MapSource. In particular, some older Garmin devices using serial connections are not supported by BaseCamp and still require MapSource for communication.
The MapSource 6.16.3 installer normally expects an existing MapSource product to be installed. Garmin documents that installing BaseCamp first can provide the components required to install MapSource when the installer reports a "Previous MapSource Not Found" error.
Maps
OpenStreetMap-based maps can be installed in MapSource.
The easiest method is to use a ready-made Garmin-format map that includes a MapSource installer. See OSM Map On Garmin/Download.
