OHM Denmark in 1905

Copyright of maps in Denmark

Maps published in Denmark by the government since early 1800s generally are subject to a special copyright that never expires. For this reason, tracing from maps that carry any marking such as Generalstabens topografiske Afdeling, Kongelige Søkort-Arkiv, Geodætisk Institut etc. should be avoided even if they appear to be out of copyright by the normal rules.

Tasks

Administrative divisions

Denmark/Administrative divisions has more details including guidelines on how the various administrative divisions can be mapped.

The goal of these tasks is to map administrative boundaries and the closely related parish boundaries as far back as these can be documented.

Task Status
Clean up chronologies around Kingdom of Denmark vs Denmark proper To Do
Region boundaries (2007-) Mapped but missing source
Amt boundaries (1970-2006) Mapped but from low resolution source
Amt boundaries (1793-1970) In progress: Southern Jutland counties missing, precise start dates missing
Amt boundaries (1662-1793) Not started, need sources
Herred boundaries In progress: Southern Jutland missing
Sognedistrikt boundaries (1803-1841) Not started: need sources for which parishes organized into districts
Sognekommune boundaries (1842-1970) Complete: Københavns Amt, Frederiksborg Amt
Købstad boundaries (?-1970) Some mapped incidentally
Kommune boundaries (1970-2006) Not started, need unrestricted sources

Regional details from Trap 2nd ed. maps

The goal of this task is to trace regional details from Trap 2nd ed. regional (county) maps.

  • Primary road network (thick black or white lines)
  • Hamlets, villages and towns as nodes (settlements)
  • Larger lakes and woods

These are details that have enough clarity at the scale of the regional maps. Smaller features like minor roads, streams, and smaller woods may be too difficult to trace accurately from these maps.

Task Status
Primary road network Complete: Frederiksborg, København, Præstø
Settlements Complete: Frederiksborg, København. In progress: Præstø
Lakes, woods Complete: Frederiksborg, København

Local details for market towns from Trap 3rd ed. maps

The goal of this task is to trace local details from Trap 3rd ed. market town (købstad) maps.

  • Street network: Trace the street network from around 1900 when the maps were created
  • Buildings and amenities: Add particular buildings and amenities marked on the maps, such as churches, city halls, hotels, etc.
Task Status
Major street network In progress: Mostly complete except the last half of the volume 3 maps
Full street network Not started
Significant structures and amenities Not started

Resources for copying/tracing

Resources that are provided without restrictions or where copyright has expired.

Trap Danmark

J.P. Trap. Statistisk Topografisk Beskrivelse af Kongeriget Danmark (see also wikipedia:da:Wikipedia:WikiProjekt_Trap_Danmark and Projekt Runeberg)

The first three editions are considered out of copyright.[1] In addition, none of the included maps appear to be based or include any data from government maps that would be covered by the special perpetual copyright of maps in Denmark. For example, the Royal Library of Denmark confirms that maps like [1] from Trap, 2nd ed. are out of copyright.

Cities

  • Maps of market towns (købstæder) in Trap, 3rd edition
  • Descriptions of market towns (købstæder) in all Trap editions.

Churches

Protected areas

Resources for learning/citing

Resources that are useful for research or citing specific facts but probably can't be copied extensively.

Buildings

Railroads

See Railways and Railway_stations for details on mapping stations.

Infrastructure

Buildings

  • Fredede og bevaringsværdige bygninger (protected buildings and buildings worthy of preservation): https://www.kulturarv.dk/fbb/index.htm This is a database with a web UI. Some datasets related to this database are mentioned at [2] but at the moment the links appear to be broken.

Churches

Farms, manor houses

Historical aerial imagery

Some of these seem like they are based on photos which might not be covered by copyright anymore since it would be expired for photos in Denmark taken before 1970 that don't have "artistic merit" (værkshøjde). Nevertheless, it seems that the private companies owning the aerial imagery still assert that they have exclusive rights.

  • 1944: LW1944 Partial coverage.
  • 1945: Flyfoto 1945 All of Denmark covered in the first set of aerial imagery of the whole country.
  • Many sets of historical aerial imagery from different years: https://flyfotos.dk/
