Proposal

This proposal proposes a way for the mapping of staris and staircases.

A staircase should be mapped in indoor areas as follows:

Rationale

We believe that in indoor-settings, mapping certain features as Ways as well as as areas is neccessary to cover all applications. The rendering of accurate indoor maps requires areas in the building to be mapped as such, while most navigation systems require ways with traditional highway=*-attributes to facilitate accurate routing. This idea for tagging accomplishes both without introducing confusing tags that some data consumers may interpret wrongly.

This tagging would be consistent with the way areas of roads can be mapped in addition to the centerline of the roads.

This tagging would be consistent with the practice to place "transitonal ways" over areas to facilitate routing.

Rendering

Example how an indoor renderer could render stairs
  • Outdoor renderers can keep their normal rendering
  • Indoor renders would be encouraged to not render the centerline and only render the stair area as another colour to show that stairs are present. Of course, they can render the centerline as something to show the staircase
