Problem Statement

In the United States, there are a number of businesses which offer taxidermy services. This is especially common in areas with lots of game hunting. Unfortunately, there is not yet a documented or approved tag that can appropriately represent this business.

Proposal

This proposal aims to add the tags craft=taxidermy and shop=taxidermy to represent taxidermist crafts and shops. The tag will be used in line with other tags in the craft=* and shop=* keys. Standard existing tagging schemes may be applied such as opening hours and addresses.

Rationale

There is presently no documented correct way to represent these kinds of business. It is obvious there is a demand for a tag like this, since there is already some use of similar undocumented tags on the database.

craft=taxidermy

shop=taxidermy

craft=taxidermist

shop=taxidermist

A unified tagging scheme will help mappers use a consistent tagging scheme that will be easier to query for data consumers.

Tagging

Tag Definition
craft=taxidermy A craft taxidermist. A business that will accept a delivered carcass and perform the work to create a taxidermy mount.
shop=taxidermy A novelty store where pre-made taxidermy mounts are available for sale.

Examples

Tag Example

shop=taxidermy https://paxtongate.com/

Impact on Data Consumers

Since this is an addition to the craft and shop keys, no adverse outcomes are likely to occur with most data consumers. No work should have to be done to most software in order to search or display this type of craft or shop unless a custom rendering is desired.

Features/Pages affected

an entry will be added to craft=* and shop=* pages, and a separate page will be created for both craft=taxidermy and shop=taxidermy

  • I approve this proposal I approve this proposal. Sensible naming, concise description, good case for unification. I'm almost inclined that this doesn't even need a proposal; that's probably a part of why turnout is low. I still like taxidermy better than taxidermist. --Jofban (talk) 00:16, 21 September 2026 (UTC)[reply]
  • I approve this proposal I approve this proposal. Not sure why this needed a proposal rather than unilaterally making a wiki page for it (nothing one could even disagree with here) , but I approve --Eatham (talk) 02:00, 21 September 2026 (UTC)[reply]
