Distinctions

I can see the utility of this, but I think one might need to distinguish between a mailroom which is delivery only (i.e., there is an internal mail system as well: case in many large offices, universities, hospitals etc), or one where the mail is both delivered and available for collection (via private mail boxes, pigeonholes - which I presume have disappeared now - or over-the-counter services). On larger sites the mail room may be closely associated with a goods inwards delivery location too (certainly case in one place I used to work). SK53 (talk) 09:29, 5 October 2022 (UTC)

The default mailroom can be assumed to be both deliver & receive, just as the default way is two way.

To record the less-common restrictive cases, you might propose an additional tag with potential attribute values:

amenity=mailroom & mailroom=deliver-only
amenity=mailroom & mailroom=pickup-only

Also, mailrooms have other policies for what they accept, e.g. letters, packages, heavy/bulky, hazmat, etc. At some universities/campuses you need to go to a separate loading dock to deliver hazardous materials, such as oxygen bottles. It's possible to design tags to record all these attributes, which might be important for various audiences, but it's also possible to over-engineer things. Perhaps someone else would like to propose a simple syntax for the values that a new 'mailroom' tag could take:

mailroom=  (delivery-only | pickup-only | )  (;letters)?  (;packages)?  (;bulky)?  (;hazmat)?
delivery_hours=...
pickup_hours=...

I'm not proposing all that, even though one can imagine it would help some people/delivery companies. I don't think it'll get used much, and it won't be kept up to date. But the location of the mailroom is long-lasting information that is directly map-related, not just policy related.

If an editor of the map wants to volunteer the policies, they could put them in the 'note' tag in human readable form. --G Forman (talk) 17:53, 6 October 2022 (UTC)

room=delivery

So far when pointing at "mailrooms" in indoor mapping context I’ve used this tag room=delivery as derived from CityGML Spec V1.0 from SIG 3D. What should be done about it? Use both tags, the room tag (which isn’t widely used) or the amenity one as it’s already the case for toilets?

  Thanks for your comment. Interesting.  It appears that the 'delivery' tag is defined as "indicates if a restaurant, a shop or other POIs offer delivery of meals or goods." (link to definition)  Not what you intended, I think.  So, I would recommend changing over to amenity=mailroom.  If you know the specific location within the building, then you can put it on a node placed well within the building outline.  --G Forman (talk) 14:17, 14 October 2022 (UTC)
