Proposal talk:Training=bicycle

Should be quite straightforward

Hope it is not too formal of me to suggest such a small addition to an existing namespace. Since I'm a new user, I thought it would be better to follow the process and get some feedback here before I start editing anything on the map with this attribute. 10:41, 16 October 2020 user:Rouelibre

Other tagging schemes already in use

A quick search on Taginfo reveals that there are several different schemes for training courses already in use, e.g.

  • motorcycle:training - bicycle:training would fit well to this
  • training=* - training=bicycle would fit well
  • education=* - education=bicycle would fit, but I think education better fits for extensive teaching
  • service:bicycle:training=yes - used twice - although 'training' is not a service offered for bicycles, but for riders.

I would rather pick one of those and not introduce another key. 12:29, 17 October 2020 user:Rouelibre

Some statistics:
education=*
training=*
motorcycle:training=*
service:bicycle:training=*

Following the existing service:bicycle:* scheme for consistency

My idea was to ensure consistency with the existing service:bicycle:* scheme (see : Key:service:bicycle)

Considering your suggestions :

  • Just like motorcycle:training keeps consistency for everything motorcycle related, service:bicycle:* keeps concistency with the bicycle attributes that are already in use
    • But "service:bicycle" implies some service for bicycles, and a training offer is not a serbice for bicycles. Different aspect, different tag. "motorcycle:training" is one example, and there are already others for other vehicle types.--Mueschel (talk) 19:10, 17 October 2020 (UTC)
  • I understand the training=* has been abandonned  ? (see Proposed_features/training) Or maybe I missed something ?
    • The proposal for amenity=training is abandoned, but training=* is used 2000 times. --Mueschel (talk) 19:10, 17 October 2020 (UTC)
      • Then I think we should go with "training=cycling" (it describes the type of training better than "training=bicycle") (PS : how do you insert your name + date at the end of your comments ? I'd like to do the same for clarity of the discussion)
      • I realized that "training=cycling" could be confused with a sports training activity, while we're referring to learning how to ride a bicycle as a means of transport here, so it's better to keep "training=bicycle". 14:19, 17 October 2020 user:Rouelibre
  • I would rule out education=* if it's rather for extensive teaching, as this kind of service (bicycle school) usually consists of something like 6 lessons of ~1h each
  • I found out service:bicycle:school is used 6 times, so maybe let's use this one instead of service:bicycle:training ? (see : https://overpass-turbo.eu/s/Z7B)

@Rouelibre:: to sign and date a comment, simply type four tildes (these: ~) after what you have to say. Three is signing without a date, and five is just a date. Arlo James Barnes (talk) 19:49, 17 November 2020 (UTC)

distinguish from mechanicking training?

Arlo James Barnes (talk) 19:46, 17 November 2020 (UTC)

This could be something like training=bicycle_repairing or training=bicycle_repair?

Notes for later

The discussions around this tag surfaced the need to clarify training=* and education=* tagging possibilities. As explained in the comments of the voting section of the main page, there are old proposals for these things but it's not in a clean state.

I will not be taking care of these big chunks. I intend to mention the approved training=bicycle tag on relevant pages of the wiki, without creating a standalone page for it until the training=* is clarified. Rouelibre (talk) 23:05, 18 December 2020 (UTC)

From my research education seems to be mainly confined to educational institutions and what type of institution they are. For instance a college or kindergarten. Whereas, training is to define the specific type of training a place provides and can be used for anywhere that provides training. Like a scuba diving center or art supply store. --Adamant1 (talk) 22:24, 27 December 2020 (UTC)
