Proposal

Create a set of tags to represent the various features BRT (bus rapid transit), including both bus stations (as opposed to bus stops) and fully separated rights of ways (as opposed to bus lanes on roads with public access).

The current tagging scheme for bus-only highways is highway=service, access=no, bus=designated.

Rationale

Busways (by which I mean bus-only highways, not bus lanes on public-access roads) have distinct properties that differentiate them from most other types of service roads. They are often critically important pieces of road infrastructure, with thousands of people travelling on them every day.

Examples

The MLK Jr. East Busway was the prime inspiration for this proposal.

  • Pittsburgh East, West, and South busways
  • LA Metro G Line
  • Curitiba RIT

Tagging

Busway stations would use station=busway, similar to the station=light_rail schema for light rail stations.
