Proposal
shop=rice is representing rice shops.
Rice shops sell rice, food produced from rice and various types of crops. Some of them sell additional goods such as fuel, farming goods and postage stamps. In countrysides where no convenience stores are found, rice shops are regarded as hubs of local communities. This shops are typically present in Japan and some other Asian countries.
Rationale
In areas where rice is regarded as a staple, rice shops are just as important as bakeries in European countries. In spite of its importance, mappers and data users are having troubles in tagging and searching rice shops.
Importance of rice and rice shops
Rice is the staple food in Japan and some asian countries. Rice is to East Asian people what bread is to European people. Based on the case of Japan, almost all families own rice cookers because standard Japanese menus include bowls of boiled rice. The government has enacted many laws regarding rice.
In recent years, rice has been sold in supermarkets, but there are many shops that specialize in rice. Particularly in rural areas, rice shops have close relationships with local agricultural cooperatives and farmers as well as consumers. Some urban rice shops sell lunch boxes and rice balls at lunchtime.
Present issues
When mappers in Japan discussed this topic, all of them agreed that rice shops should be tagged with a dedicated value and that using existing values is quite confusing. It turned out that while most mappers choose shop=convenience, food, supermarket or grocery, some have been tagged them as shop=rice.
As things stand now, people who want to buy rice, the "staple food," are in difficulty. If bakery tag was not defined, people who eat bread as a staple food would have troubles when finding shops for their daily bread.
Similar tags (and why they aren't fitting)
- grocery: This tag covers grain stores, but shops tagged as grocery do not necessarily deal in rice. grocery includes both stores that sell ingredients for holiday baking and shops of the most important daily food.
- food: The area covered by this unapproved tag is too broad.
- supermarket: The rice shops specialize in rice and foods made from rice and different from supermarkets. If rice shops are tagged as supermarket, users who are looking for supermarkets are confused.
- convenience: In some cases, this tag is suitable. In rural areas where no convenience stores exist, rice stores sell various goods and offer useful services as convenience stores. It is appropriate to tag such rice shops as convenience or supermarket.
Examples
In rural areas, there is usually one or more rice shops per village. In urban areas, there are several rice shops in an area. In more developed areas, supermarkets have replaced the role of rice shops.
