Use the place tag to identify the largest settlement or settlements within a territory, including national, state and provincial capitals, and other major conurbations. |
|||
Smaller charter cities should normally be tagged using place to avoid these places being promoted too highly in gazetteer search results. By way of example, the charter city of Alameda in California (population 76,000) is tagged as a town, due to its proximity to the much larger and better known cities of San Francisco (populations 805,000) and Oakland (population 309,000). |

For the avoidance of doubt, the use of the city tag within OSM will not always match the official designation of a place as a city. Except in the most rural of locations this tag should not be used for settlements with populations of less than 100,000, or for ones which are smaller than other nearby larger or more important settlements, even if they are official designated to be a city. Consider using place for these. The reason for this is to avoid smaller less notable places being promoted excessively within gazetteer searches or being featured inappropriately on wide area maps for the territory. |
|||
By way of example, Alameda, within the Bay Area of California (population 76,000) is very close to San Francisco (populations 805,000) and Oakland (population 309,000). This place should probably be tagged as a town even though it is officially a Charter city. |

Use the place=city tag to identify the largest settlement or settlements within a territory, including national, state and provincial capitals, and other major conurbations.
Smaller charter cities should normally be tagged using place=town to avoid these places being promoted too highly in gazetteer search results. By way of example, the charter city of Alameda in California (population 76,000) is tagged as a town, due to its proximity to the much larger and better known cities of San Francisco (populations 805,000) and Oakland (population 309,000).
How to Map
Add the place=city to appropriate node or area. If adding the tag to a node, it is preferred to place it where the city hall is located.
The following should ideally all be included for a city:
- name=*: for the name of the city in the primary language for the territory. See Names for guidance on further considerations when setting the name.
- population=*: for the population of the city or metropolitan area.
- wikipedia=*: All cities are likely to have a wikipedia article. Link to the article in the primary language for the place. See wikipedia article for guidance on which language to use.
- Suitable place=suburb nodes to define for the top level named areas of the city and probably also place=neighbourhood for the next tier of named areas.
And also the following where appropriate:
You can also add other useful information as shown in the example. This is useful for searching.
Example
place=city
name=بغداد
is_in:continent=Asia
is_in:country=Iraq
is_capital=country - Not currently in Map Features
name:ar=بغداد
name:de=Bagdad
name:en=Baghdad
name:fr=Bagdad
