Proposal

Use for shops that sells one or more nutritional supplements (of vitamins, minerals and/or herbs) used for:

  • health
  • strength
  • fitness
  • weight loss

Rationale

Currently, fitness is becoming very important for people around the world and we don't have an OSM tag to describe a store selling dietary and food supplements.

Examples

GNC (General Nutrition Centers) is a global brand with several thousands of shops; As of September 30, 2014, GNC has

  • More than 8,800 locations:
    • Of which more than 6,500 retail locations are in the United States (including 1,063 franchise and 2,258 Rite Aid franchise store-within-a-store locations)
  • Franchise operations in more than 50 countries

GNC overview

OMNILIFE is a company that develops, produces, and distributes dietary supplements in the form of powdered and liquid vitamins.

  • Its nutrition and supplementation products are distributed in 24 countries.

Omnilife.com

I found a previous discussion of this tag at Talk:Proposed_features/supplements and another users asking for this at Google.

Tagging

  • amenity=pharmacy is not applicable because are not medications.
  • shop=herbalist is not applicable because can be or can't be herbs; products can be synthetic

Applies to

Nodes or areas; if an store is smaller it would not be mapped as an area, but as a node.

Rendering

Supplement shops should be rendered as a pictogram silhouette of an arm with a flexed bicep or with a pills. They should only be rendered at high zoom levels.

Features/Pages affected

I guess just a tags, currently the GNC shops are tagged with a lot of different tags like health, pharmacy, health_food, nutrition, information, herbalist, Health and Vitamin, supplements, nutrition_supplements, etc.

  • I approve this proposal I approve this proposal. "Use for shops that sells one or more nutritional supplements" - some shops may sell nutrition supplements and be primarily some other shop type. Adding "primarily" or something similar to definition would handle it. Sorry for not complaining about it earlier Mateusz Konieczny (talk) 05:30, 15 September 2015 (UTC)
Think most shop tags are for the primary thing sold in that shop. For instance a bakery that also sells fruit. Warin61 (talk) 07:56, 15 September 2015 (UTC)
I see that other shops are defines similarly. Switching to straight yes Mateusz Konieczny (talk) 10:13, 15 September 2015 (UTC)
