A  inverted siphon is a U-shaped culvert that allows one waterway cross an obstruction, by flowing down and then back up.

This is an unusual feature because water can not normally flow upwards, as shown in the diagram.

How to map

Tag the waterway as waterway=* + tunnel=culvert + culvert=inverted_siphon.

Example: Photo | OSM

Useful tag combinations

Use:

  • layer=-1 to indicate the culverts vertical position relative to other map features like other buildings, waterways, roads and pipelines
  • material=* to specify the construction material of the culvert
  • incline=* if the culvert follows an inclined trajectory.
  • length=* to specify the length of the culvert
  • diameter=* for the nominal diameter of circular culverts.
  • width=* for the width of non-circular culverts.
  • height=* for the height of non-circular culverts.
  • flow rate=* for the capacity of the culvert.

Non-inverted siphons

Non-inverted siphons (or 'normal' siphons) are not tunnels, and should not use this tag. Instead, use man_made=pipeline + location=overground.

Example: Photo | YouTube.

History

There was a discussion on the tagging mailing list about how to tag inverted siphons. This tag was the only suggestion.
