addr=main is used to mark the location of an address, a unique object for geolocation that is suitable for routing. The tag specifies whether addr:*=* tags are used to map addresses as unique features (relevant for geolocation and routing) or whether they specify POI details (contact information, just as phone or website). For each distinct address, there should only be one object marked with addr=main.

Take a look at Proposal:addr=main for more details.

Tagging

addr=main should be added to the object with addr:*=* keys which best represents the location linked to the matching address. It may be added in a POI itself if its geometry best matches what the address should represent or an isolated geometry (node, way, relation) as well.
