Status: deprecated

exclamation mark

This feature has been labeled as deprecated. The recommended replacement is: office=government + government=* for most administrative government offices, or amenity=townhall for the primary location of a municipal government such as a city hall, town hall or village hall.
The reason is documented in Deprecated features. You are still free to continue to use or interpret this tag as you see fit since OpenStreetMap does not have “banned features”.
Under no circumstances should you (semi-)automatically change “deprecated” tags to something else in the database on a large scale without conforming to the automated edits code of conduct. Any such change will be reverted.

This tag was previously used for "a place where public administration is located, for example the complaints office, public health fund or employment-centre."

There are two approved tags which are more commonly used for this purpose: office=government + government=* for most administrative government offices, or amenity=townhall for the primary location of a municipal government such as a city hall, town hall or village hall.

There are also tags for places with other kind of administration: office=religion, office=association etc.
