An animal crossing is a place where animals are known to appear unexpectedly, presenting a collision hazard to motorists. This tag is optionally combined with hazard:animal=* or hazard:species=* to indicate the type of animal that is known to appear (e.g., deer, moose, livestock, etc).
This tag should not be confused with man_made=wildlife_crossing, which refers to bridges, tunnels & other structures designed to allow wildlife to safely pass across a road or highway.
If the animal crossing only occurs at a certain time of year, the tag seasonal=yes can be added.
How to tag
Animal crossing hazards may be mapped in the following ways:
- Place a node
at the location of the animal crossing hazard traffic sign, tagged traffic_sign=hazard (or code) + hazard=animal_crossing + hazard:animal=* or hazard:species=*. - Tag a node along a highway=* way
at the location of the sign - Tag the section of highway=* where the animal crossing hazard is present.
