This tag indicates that a route relation is part of Utah's state route system. The state route number is given as a bare number in ref=*.
For backwards compatibility, each member highway=* way is redundantly tagged with a ref=SR * tag. This is an intentionally human-readable tag that should only be displayed verbatim. Any data consumer that needs to do more, such as displaying a route shield, should consult the route relation.
From around 2010 to 2025, ref=UT * was more common, but this format is now deprecated in favor of ref=SR *. [1]
