A trail is a type of path of a rural character primarily intended for recreational walking, hiking, or running. Trails differ from other types of paths in that their primary purpose is for pedestrian access to natural or semi-natural outdoor areas rather than for pedestrian transportation. The functional purpose of trails is just as much for access to the trail itself as it is for the destinations served by such trails.
