Useful combination
Status: de facto

Used for different type of boating routes, scope is not quite clear and there seems to be overlap with other, frequently used tags such as route=motorboat, route=canoe, route=ferry (for instance for regular passenger transport Germany), and route=waterway (for instance for large scale waterway routes in the United States).

Furthermore, the use of the term boat=* for a passenger transport service is confusing, because in established OSM-terms) this means pleasure crafts (small boats); for large commercial vessels the term Maki2-ferry-18.svg ship=* is used instead.

How to Map

Boats may be similar to the ferry but make sure that route may be a boat.

  • Make sure if the route type is correct.
  • If known, set it to boat by using the tag route=boat.
  • If the route is single, use a way way. If multiple, use a relation relation instead using the tags route=boat, and type=route.

How to map using a single way

Draw a way way from one boat terminal to another and add route=boat and name=*.

How to map using a relation

The relation approach is more complicated and unnecessary for basic boat routes, which can be represented by a single way way, such as those which cross a river or canal.

Key Value Comment
type route If you are using a relation, this should always have a 'type' tag, in this case type=route. If the route is on a single way way, don't use this tag.
