Gymnastics can be several types of sport, but in its purest form the gymnastics we see at the olympics involves agile people in lycra doing flips and summersaults on a mat.

We might be tempted to define gymnastics as any sport taking place in a "gymnasium". For starters that would be incorrect, since many gymnasiums are kitted out for sports such as basketball (which is not "gymnastics") but also note that the shortened word "gym" is highly ambiguous. Steer clear of it.
