 | Relations are not categories. You should not create relations to group all objects of a certain type in an area. For example a relation listing the coastlines of Wales does not belong in OSM. If you wanted to find all the coastlines in Wales you could do so with the Xapi, Overpass API or Osmosis. |
This relation type groups together elements that are somehow related by a common identity.
This relation type was originally proposed as a generic solution for collecting the ways that make up a linear feature with a common name. However, this proposal was abandoned in favor of semantic relation types such as type=street, type=associatedStreet, type=route, and type=waterway. type=multilinestring later developed as a generic relation type, similar to the original proposal, for miscellaneous features. As of September 2023, only 13.6% of members of collection relations are highway=*, waterway=*, or railway=* ways as originally proposed.
