The  Floodgate plays a significant role for river network regulation, hydro-electric energy production, irrigation and to protect human settlements from floods and droughts.

It regulates the flow of water from a body of water by shutting out, admitting, or releasing water from a reservoir, river, stream, canal. Floodgates can also be used to manage the level of water on a tidal body of water. The taller gates on dams can be designed to set spillway crest heights in spillways. Other type of gates may be used to adjust flow rates in sluices and canals, to stop the water flow entirely as part of a levee or storm surge system. In the case of flood bypass systems, floodgates sometimes are also used to lower the water levels in a main river or canal channels by allowing more water to flow into a flood bypass or detention basin when the main reservoir, river or canal is approaching a flood stage.

How to map

  • As node:
Floodgates which are within a dam structure can be drawn as a node node where the waterway=river way intersects the waterway=dam way at the point where the top gate is located and add the tag waterway=floodgate. Direction of the waterway should be downstream (from top gate).
  • As area:
It is also possible to map the exact location of the Floodgate as an area area and add the tag waterway=floodgate.
  • As way:
Floodgate doors on a river can be drawn as a way way and tagged with waterway=floodgate.
