Duplicate of reservation? or walk-in?

I have noticed that you create this page recently.

I know that translation is not really the same, but Key:reservation is already well established (85k) and the goal is the same.

There is also Key:walk-in that is the opposite of appointment.

I know you mentioned semantics but I still think both should be separate keys because one specifically refers to (flexible) opening hours of services and the other still requires you to abide the given opening hours, especially because opening hours=* recommends "by appointment" rather than "reservation". walk-in=* specifically applies to clinics and similar amenites but there also are shops and other services which are walk-in by default but sometimes are only open by appointment.

Besides, this tag has been used for almost 400 times (which is more walk-in=*), not to mention and a discussion in this talk section also isn't as accessible as the mailing list or the forums. --ManuelB701 (talk) 15:57, 11 October 2026 (UTC)

"by appointment" is a free text. On the same wiki page, there is also “A short comment (wrapped in " but not containing any " within) showing applicable restrictions or specifications, e.g. "children only", "limited service", or "reservation by phone", reservation=*.”

Appointment could be better outside of regular opening hours. It could be like: “On appointment outside regular opening hours”. The example is a fallback rule: “Mo-Sa 08:00-13:00,14:00-17:00 || "by appointment"”. Sound more logicial I think. And it will create a real different meaning compare to reservation.

Currently, the value of appointment are mostly a duplicate of reservation.

• reservation= yes / appointment=yes => appointment possible
• reservation=no / appointment=no => appointment not possible
• etc.

Appointment will not work when it is required at some opening hours. A key will be for all the opening hours (that's the same for reservation). I know cases where it not. So if we have `opening_hours=Mo-Tu 08:00-12:00; Fr "by appointment"`, we will still need some appointment/reservation free text. (But, that's just a limitation. Nothing to do with duplicate idea.)
