artwork instead of artwork_type

Shouldn't Key:artwork be used instead of artwork_type? The RedBurn (talk) 22:09, 7 January 2017 (UTC)

The short aswer is: no. You could have done so, but it is more accurate. --geozeisig (talk) 08:08, 8 January 2017 (UTC)
The long answer is that artwork=* or something like art_form=* would be better, but artwork_type=* was suggested in the proposal that has been approved by voting (with only 8 votes, that's what OSM history is like). --Fkv (talk) 01:25, 7 March 2018 (UTC)
Post-note: Should change the status in this article from "in use" to "approved". However, same with your example of art_form=* (to me it's also better to keep it as simple as artwork=* until a more detailed classification can be devised), you can see new tags like artist:wikidata=* mixing with old "approved" ones as artist_name=*. For comparison, on creators, architect=* is used, instead of architect_name=*. ---- Kovposch (talk) 05:46, 27 November 2020 (UTC)
I support this. Just to chime in the use-case that makes me say that: I'm trying to add 1000s of public art installations made on city infrastructure objects like Tag:man_made=street_cabinet. I'm involved in a public art mapping project that the city itself runs. This city (largest in Canada) commissions artists to create and maintain graffiti and murals on the city's physical property. Using start_date=* to describe artwork on an object tagged Tag:man_made=street_cabinet is confusing when the desire is it indicate when the art piece was created (since it seems to be saying the cabinet was installed then), but neither tourism:start_date=* nor artwork_type:start_date=* feel semantically accurate. artwork:start_date=* would feel like a better descriptor of when the painting happened. --Patcon (talk) 00:09, 27 November 2020 (UTC)
Further, artwork:operator:type=government and artwork:operator=StreetARToronto make more sense as well. Allows semantic remixing of existing properties to suit purpose, whereas artwork_type does not feel as permissible to that. --Patcon (talk) 00:25, 27 November 2020 (UTC)
At least on artwork:*=* you are correct, as what I noted above. However, artwork_type=* pretty much will remain. ---- Kovposch (talk) 05:46, 27 November 2020 (UTC)
