There are some cases where the button doesn't need to be pressed

The value button_operated=yes shouldn't mean that the button must be pressed to allow pedestrian passage (in the case of traffic signals). In my city, there are some button-operated traffic signals that allow pedestrian passage at a regular interval, and may allow it in a shorter interval in case the button is pressed. I do believe there are traffic signals that only allow pedestrian passage if the button is pressed, but I don't think that's always the case. I will change it accordingly in the wiki. (perhaps there could be a new value for the sake of expressing the button must be pressed) --Jgpacker (talk) 14:25, 2 November 2014 (UTC)

It seems that you should alert Mateusz Konieczny to your change. --Tordanik 14:57, 3 November 2014 (UTC)
I updated that page as well. --Jgpacker (talk) 17:35, 6 January 2015 (UTC)

button operated traffic signals

Please let us discuss here https://community.openstreetmap.org/t/button-operated-traffic-signals/7752 what button operated means on traffic signals. --Langläufer (talk) 10:38, 11 January 2023 (UTC)

These buttons usually do nothing at all

This video https://www.youtube.com/shorts/6ex2_u6YZzE illustrates the situation

verifiability

@Mateusz Konieczny is you add a "the verifiability is disputed, at least open a thread. this tag informs if there is a button. it seems to me easy to check: you just have to see if there is a button. the tag does not inform if the button causes the execution of the request immediately and this uniformly 24 hours a day. if you call a lift but it is busy or the door is blocked in open position on another floor, it will not come... yet the button is still there... it is exactly the same with traffic: if its logic says that there is more priority than your request or that your request will be processed in x minutes, the button is still there. so i propose to remove the verifiability banner Marc marc (talk) 17:47, 13 May 2023 (UTC)

Yes, it's not always detectable (especially at places where major roads intersect), but in most cases it's possible. We're not going to say that you shouldn't try this review first. The information that the traffic light has simply a button for anything is as good as worthless in itself. --Langläufer (talk) 17:47, 16 May 2023 (UTC)

button_operated=only

The third most common value is button_operated=only with 796 uses. I'm pretty certain this means that the button must be pressed to get a green signal (or whatever else). Perhaps this should be documented? --Popball (talk) 17:14, 14 July 2023 (UTC)
