What is the purpose of this tag?

Why is this tag needed? Seems to be used in a limited area near southern Germany. --Jeisenbe (talk) 05:43, 13 June 2020 (UTC)

If the gtfs data is provided by the network a general unified id for the network is needed to map the gtfs data to OSM. It is used by PTNA (website) to find the correct route_id and shape_id and to evaluate the (GTFS-) links for the route(_master) relations. In future, an evaluations between GTFS and OSM is planned. See PTNA - Munich area or PTNA - Freiburg area for examples.
This is still work in progress. I hope to find time to add more context the next weeks, as most of the documentation is in German so far.--Skyper 22:39, 15 June 2020 (UTC)
I have started to collect more information about PTNA and GTFS. There are more links and more pages about the subject now, hope that helps a bit. More words are welcome and note, the tagging system around this subject is more or less still experimental, though, PTNA already uses some keys. --Skyper 10:26, 29 July 2020 (UTC)
I spoke also with developers of OsmAnd and how they would like to integrate GTFS (more general: schedule information) into OsmAnd's bus-routing. Using GTFS, for a route-variant, you need the trip_id which could be tagged as gtfs:trip_id=*, but then you still need to find the publisher of the GTFS data. This can be done via gtfs:feed=*, operator:guid=* or network:guid=* in this order if one of them is not set. --ToniE (talk) 11:10, 29 July 2020 (UTC)
