Boom gate

This seems to have been translated from the German "Schranke"/ "Schlagbaum" or something like that, but the examples mapped are all from an ancient Roman context, and I cannot find any results for the combination of "ancient Roman" and "boom gate" online, so I must presume that there is a more correct translation for it. Maybe a turnpike? B-unicycling (talk) 21:59, 16 October 2022 (UTC)

Forget it. There are only 6 instances. --Fkv (talk) 23:14, 16 October 2022 (UTC)

Deprecated

Now that the tag is “deprecated”, what does it mean? When I will tag a new site tomorrow, what tags should I use? I am using a map that looks for site_type and with current usage it seems a safe bet to suggest continuing the use of the tag for the moment. —-Dieterdreist (talk) 20:19, 5 December 2022 (UTC)

You can still use site_type=*. All instances will be replaced in automated edits anyway soon. --Fkv (talk) 20:32, 5 December 2022 (UTC)
When is this meant to happen? Two weeks on we have quite a bit of a mess with half of the instances replaced, and the other half reverted or not yet touched at all. Is there a plan and somebody in charge? See also the discussion in the forum --ChillyDL (talk) 01:05, 18 December 2022 (UTC)
I've added the deprecated template to the page (recommending archaeological_site=* as the replacement) as well as a "note on status". Of course whichever of the two options you chose to use is up to you. Casey boy (talk) 17:09, 6 December 2022 (UTC)
Someone should open an issue on iD Editor Github tracker to have it stop being recommended if no ones done so yet. Otherwise replacing it with automated edits, or really any kind of edits, will be kind of pointless. --Adamant1 (talk) 05:42, 7 December 2022 (UTC)
My "deprecated" edits were silently reverted by Dieterdreist in https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/w/index.php?title=Key:site_type&diff=2498477&oldid=2494355. I actually think it's possibly right not to list this page as deprecated, not because of the dispute around the deprecation process but because site_type is only deprecated for historical sites. Whilst this usage is clearly the focus of this documentation, it's not the only usage. However I don't think the "note on status" section should have been removed and will be adding this back in. For implementation by mechanical edit, see here --ChillyDL (talk) 01:51, 17 January 2023 (UTC)

Automated edits of this key

It is worth documenting that there have been several automated or systematic edits to features tagged with this key, particularly in regard to transitioning usage to the archaeological_site=* key. See: https://community.openstreetmap.org/t/implementation-of-new-tagging-scheme-of-archaeological-site/7850 and links therein for more details. Casey boy (talk) 10:59, 2 May 2023 (UTC)
