maxspeed-zones apply to all vehicles

Sorry but this isn't true "In Germany maxspeed-zones apply to all vehicles while maxspeed-signs only apply to motorized-vehicles. " In Germany both, maxspeed-zones and maxspeed-signs apply to all vehicles —Preceding unsigned comment added by Gsperb (talkcontribs) 2015-08-13

Sign inclusive zone sign apply to all vehicle, the urban speed limit of 50 km/h only applies to motorized vehicle. --Langläufer (talk) 20:50, 24 April 2023 (UTC)

remove urban/rural/motorway from this scheme

These values are not widely used and it is completely redundant to maxspeed:type (and source:maxspeed) Only use this for zones like 30,20,10 - zone

source:maxspeed = DE:urban 156,000
source:maxspeed = DE:zone30 106,000
source:maxspeed = DE:rural 21,000
source:maxspeed = DE:motorway 20,000

maxspeed:type = DE:zone30 86,000
maxspeed:type = DE:urban 61,000
maxspeed:type = DE:rural 15,000
maxspeed:type = DE:motorway 15,000

zone:maxspeed = DE:30 92,000
zone:maxspeed = DE:urban 11,000
zone:maxspeed = DE:rural 300
zone:maxspeed = DE:motorway 60

maxspeed:type=* and source:maxspeed=* are redundant to zone:maxspeed=*. The keys should be merged instead of removing some of the values from one of them.

Completely redundant

maxspeed is always tagged on ways, never on areas. A maxspeed zone doesn't exist as an object in the database. This tag is completely redundant to maxspeed:type / source:maxspeed = ??:zone?? / ??:zone:?? and causes needless confusion and double-tagging. It adds no value whatsoever and should not be used. We already have 4 (!) variants to tag this. --Wolfbert (talk) 10:11, 5 April 2025 (UTC)

To clarify further, if areas are to be used to describe zones in which certain traffic rules apply, then all zonal tags must be set on the area. --Wolfbert (talk) 08:04, 7 May 2025 (UTC)
The other way around. The newer keys maxspeed:type=* and source:maxspeed=* are redundant to this older key. Since the documentation had been changed to propose those two, they are used a lot more today. Nowadays I am in favour to merge zone:maxspeed=* and source:maxspeed=* into maxspeed:type=*. But a user pointed out that there could be a signed maxspeed in a zoned maxspeed and we should keep both informations. At least we should get rid of source:maxspeed=* (with fixed values). --phobie m d 13:19, 2 July 2025 (UTC)

Examples too Eurocentric

This section badly needs example outside continental Europe, as there are countries outside Europe that use zonal speed limit signage as well. UK is amazingly absent from the examples (maybe due to different units for speed?). This also includes countries that use signage standards based on the U.S. MUTCD, such as the U.S. itself, Canada and Australia. I am working to add some examples from such countries.-TagaSanPedroAko (talk) 07:43, 7 May 2025 (UTC)

UK is there with GB:20_mph. Feel free to extend the documentation to be less Eurocentric, but keep in mind that most users only tag maxspeed:type=* and its duplicate source:maxspeed=* today. --phobie m d 12:57, 2 July 2025 (UTC)

What defines a "zone"?

Apart from being redundant, this tag is also ill defined. Judging from the examples, a zone can be practically anything except a speed limit explicitly signed with a number, so is essentially meaningless. E.g. in Austria, this would cover at least five traffic signs. --Wolfbert (talk) 08:57, 4 June 2025 (UTC)

Yes, there are redundant keys like source:maxspeed=* and maxspeed:type=*. I don't see how it is ill defined. A zone is defined by all public roads within an area marked by zone/area-signs. It is not meaningless, because it is helpful to know why a numeric maxspeed=* is defined. --phobie m d 17:20, 29 June 2025 (UTC)
