Tagging distant speed limits, fixed of normal and B/C type combined
How does one tag (distant) speed limits, fixed, of combined normal and B and C type?
See an example in https://youtu.be/BE4PIxck8-4?si=D5jJUVt5T-DsaxNx&t=182.
--Hiddewie (talk) 19:10, 23 January 2026 (UTC)
- Hi Hiddewie, this type of signaling would be tagged as 3 discrete nodes like this:
railway=signal ref=173003 railway:position:exact=120.500 railway:signal:direction=forward railway:signal:position=left railway:signal:speed_limit_distant=FR:TIV-D_C_FIXE railway:signal:speed_limit_distant:type=FR:C railway:signal:speed_limit_distant:speed=140 source=SNCF - 03/2022 railway=signal ref=173001 railway:crocodile=no railway:position:exact=120.500 railway:signal:direction=forward railway:signal:position=left railway:signal:speed_limit_distant=FR:TIV-D_FIXE railway:signal:speed_limit_distant:form=light railway:signal:speed_limit_distant:speed=130 source=SNCF - 03/2022 railway=signal ref=173002 railway:position:exact=120.500 railway:signal:direction=forward railway:signal:position=left railway:signal:speed_limit=FR:Z railway:signal:speed_limit:function=entry source=SNCF - 03/2022
- Every board or sign has its own ref (called idreseau in the formerly open data of SNCF Réseau, the manager of the railway infrastructure) so they cannot share the same node.
- Values (ref, position:exact, direction) are examples. noeld (talk) 19:36, 30 January 2026 (UTC)
- Thank you for the examples, I will adjust the tagging of some signals I added in the area of Chambéry around https://www.openstreetmap.org/node/13480003789. --Hiddewie (talk) 17:58, 1 February 2026 (UTC)
FR:PN-A signal type
Hi noeld! The current tagging for level crossing announcement sign is railway:signal:crossing_distant=FR:PN_A. But according to the documentation on signal types, crossing_distant is used for signals which warn of an upcoming level crossing signal, while crossing_hint ("Level crossing announcement board") fits perfectly. As only a single FR:PN-A is tagged at the moment, I think we could still change it to railway:signal:crossing_hint=FR:PN_A. What do you think? --Entbert (talk) 18:49, 28 January 2026 (UTC)
- Hi Entbert, you are correct. I've changed the tag accordingly. Thanks. noeld (talk) 05:41, 29 January 2026 (UTC)
ETCS tagging harmonisation proposal
Sorry for the spam, but since the proposal I have written would also affect tagging in France I think it would be relevant to make you aware of it.
A pair of months ago I started the proposal to unify the markers regarding ETCS, as they are the same in all the countries, so the proposal is available at the following link: https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Proposal:Unified_ETCS_Signals_(railway) and RFC on the community here: https://community.openstreetmap.org/t/rfc-feature-proposal-unified-etcs-signals-railway/139558
If you have comments, ideas or any other input please use the discussion page of the proposal or the RFC community thread.
Thank you
