Don't use the amenity namespace

I don't have a much better idea yet, but I would suggest to try to put this into some kind of toilet or wastewater "namespace" instead of the overcrowded amenity. On top of that please look into the meaning of the word (I know, it's not the words meaning, but the OSM meaning, but nevertheless...) of amenity http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amenity that indicates IMHO that a sceptic tank definitively doesn't fit into amenity. --Jongleur 20:21, 22 October 2011 (BST)

Feedback on the mailinglists suggests we change "amenity" to "man_made" This sounds like a good idea.

John Eldredge points out "It would also make sense to map the drain field location as well as the location of the septic tank, if such a location is known, to reduce the risk of subsequent excavations running into the drain field plumbing. In the case of a septic system that has been in place for years, there may no longer be records, or visible evidence, of the exact location of the drain field."

That would require an extra tag. landuse? drainfield=yes? suggestions welcome.

collect similar man-made things

septic tank is one of the many objects forming part of a sewage system. I suppose it would be best to select or introduce a tag for sewage objects. so a septic tank would be tag:sewage=septic tank, and a sewage tube tag:sewage=pipe, or something like this. so "don'd crowd a generic namespace" but group together things that have to do with each other. I didn't check how those basins for waste water management are marked, but I think that a septic tank should fall in the same category as they.

I see in waste water treating plant in Utrecht (http://www.openstreetmap.org/#map=18/52.10880/5.10903&layers=D) having its sedimentation tanks marked as "tag:natural=water", which is probably the closest thing one could find, but I'm sure sedimentation tanks have very little to do with "nature"!

I've long wanted to find suitable tags for the various facilities found in wastewater & water treatment works. These would be much better than using natural=water. SK53 (talk) 12:20, 8 December 2016 (UTC)

Cesspits

Could cesspits https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cesspit somehow be included in this proposal? There are places where it's still common to find and use cesspits. --naoliv (talk) 11:02, 8 December 2016 (UTC)

I would use man_made for these too. Do cesspit locations not move about. I know relatives with houses without a mains sewage connextion would move the cesspit fairly regularly. (They now either have a septic tank or mains sewage). SK53 (talk) 12:18, 8 December 2016 (UTC)

man made=storage_tank

I think that man made=septic tank could be tagged as: man made=storage_tank + content=wastewater + location=underground ect. Cz ja (talk) 21:57, 15 October 2018 (UTC)
