Proposal talk:Carpool

Hi, I have no experience on a private carpool, are there any companies offering this service? If so, why don't we extend the existing amenity=car_sharing for example with operator=private or something else? --!i! This user is member of the wiki team of OSM 19:00, 12 November 2010 (UTC)

I do not know company who offers carpooling services, it's not the goal of this tag. When you decide to do carpooling witj someone it's useful to know where you can left you car, and if the parking is known as available for carpooling it's a good idea to choose this one rather than middle of the street. You can do carpooling by your own without any link with a company. Rodolphe 17:23, 13 Nov 2010 (UTC).

parking=* for physical differences not way of using

See park and ride proposal for same discussion. It would better to use carpool=yes or hov=designated.--vsandre 13:40, 16 November 2010 (UTC)

After the first read I was agree with you, but carpooling is really different than park ride. Using carpool=yes could imply that is possible to tag carpool=no, or it's not possible to restrcited the access to a parkling to people who want to do carpooling. It's logical to indicate that there's not park and ride, but not there's no carpolling on a parking because you do not know all the people who parked their car. Using parking=carpool is more accurate to indicate this parking is used as a well known place of carpooling. Rodolphe 21:59, 24 Nov 2010 (UTC).
parking=carpooling does not work together with parking=surface, multi-storey, underground or others!--vsandre 09:13, 25 November 2010 (UTC)
BTW Are these parking spaces marked with a special sign? Or do only you want to tag suggestions to carpool. --vsandre 09:20, 25 November 2010 (UTC)
I agree this is not logical to use the parking=carpooling with parking=surface, multi-storey, underground or others, but I'm not very enthusiastic with the idea to create the carpool=*, I would prefer to group all the different usage of a parking in the same key than create a new one each time. Rodolphe 08:17, 26 Nov 2010 (UTC).
Tell me what is the different usage of parking your car in a underground or multi-storey car park? According to park_ride=* the proposing of carpool=* would be stringent. But I am not sure which values would fit best: designated/official for signed carpooling car parks and yes for suggestions? --vsandre 12:37, 26 November 2010 (UTC)
I thougth about carpool=welcome, what do you think ? Rodolphe 22:38, 26 Nov 2010 (UTC).
I vote for carpool=designated, as it seems more coherent with many other tag scheme.

signalisation

Covoiturage Le Prozo

Yes this parking are marked with a special traffic sign, here in France we have this dedicated sign http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fichier:Covoiturage_Le_Prozo.JPG I will propose in the future a special symbol for renderinf too. Rodolphe 08:17, 26 Nov 2010 (UTC).

Thank you --vsandre 12:38, 26 November 2010 (UTC)

Further Description

It would be good to clarify what carpool parking is as you have only explained what carpooling is. I *assume* it is a parking area (or section of a parking area) where you can only park if you are part of a carpooling scheme or just had multiple occupants in the car. For example companies may let you have reserved car parking spaces (or a better space, near the entrance) to encourage more people to share cars and less people to drive. I would then suggest that access=carpool might be considered, as a wide range of values for the access key are already used on amenity=parking. - LastGrape/Gregory 20:46, 12 April 2011 (BST)

High Occupancy Vehicles (HOVs)

Carpooling could be considered to just be an alternative term for High Occupancy Vehicles (HOVs) amd so perhaps it makes sense to extend the hov=2 use to be for parking areas as well as highways. See Proposed features/hov access - LastGrape/Gregory 20:46, 12 April 2011 (BST)

What is carpooling?

Carpooling is something happening on the road, not necessarily in a parking nor with a rendez-vous. I have to abandon my tagging project by lack of a suitable tag. Best explanation is to quote this (see replies): Tagging: Car sharing: which kind

In Tag:amenity=car_sharing, I see no way to distinguish

  • a Carsharing station, where you get your booked car, often separate areas on parking places
  • a roadside place with a bus stop like pole near which "non-hitching", subscribed pedestrians stand to stop similarly subscribed car drivers for a lift; using the subscription numbers, the pickup can be recorded for safety with a text message.

Mistaking one for the other is in both cases "funny" :-) (Trying to phone the pole or standing by waiting just outside the station.)
