Better purpose

Formalities: I don't see your email on the Tagging mailing list. Not a complete RFC.
I don't suspose allowing on areas must need an RFC (you could simply ask a question, as they are already being used on areas), but there are 2 issues common to all machines (including amenity=atm and amenity=washing_machine) you should look into:

  1. How to indicate single vs multiple machines, especially when you have an area. (cf Talk:Tag:amenity=atm#Tagging_multiple_ATMs, at least when they have the same attributes)
  2. How to distinguish from a building/room/"shop" with only small / standard-size machines (not a shop on its own, nor an automated shop). This is encountered on ATM branches, laundry rooms (not a shop=laundry), and rest areas on roads, or refreshment corners elsewhere. Talk:Tag:amenity=vending_machine#In_otherwise_covered_locations.

Tag:amenity=parcel_locker#How_to_map defines amenity=parcel_locker for a singular "machine", so it has already been decided there.
For the options you raised, it's more of a building=service than building=retail or building=kiosk, as concluded in Talk:Tag:amenity=vending_machine#Vending_machine_as_area.

That’s some pretty good points you brought up, enough to make me change my opinion.I haven’t thought to check atms and laundries tagging which would have been useful. I’ll use your suggestion that is to use a combination of building=service and amenity=vending_machine which now seems way less silly than I thought. I’ll give up this proposal and link to it on other wiki pages. --Lejun (talk) 08:23, 27 January 2022 (UTC)
