Garage Of Associated Property

Consider a detached house with a detached garage on a plot of land clearly demarking the house from its surroundings. What tags should be added to the garage? The house has its associated address tags. I can think of three options and I am interested in the pros and cons of each, as well as which is recommended (or more options if relevant):

  1. Should the garage remain un-addressed?
  2. Should the garage have a copy of the address?
  3. Should the garage and house form a relationship, and the relationship hold address information?

1) In most places where I have lived, a garage does not have a separate address. However, there are exceptions: in some cases a garage has been converted into a housing unit or workshop and has an official address, and in that case it should be mapped. In that case the address will generally be different than the address of the house.
2) Do not copy the same address on two buildings.
3) It's not necessary to use a relation to map the address as including both buildings. If the address is associated with the land or the whole property (as is the case in some countries), it is possible to add the address to the area, mapped as a closed way, according to the page Key:addr - though this is much less common than mapping the address as a point (node) at the entrance of the main building. --Jeisenbe (talk) 15:28, 12 August 2020 (UTC)

Garage doors

Garages have big doors for cars and little doors for people. Mention how to tag. Jidanni (talk) 16:00, 20 October 2022 (UTC)

Generally, doors leading to buildings are tagged with entrance=*. You can add width=* if you want to distinguish different widths. Also suitable for barrier=gate, although not in the garage context. --Dieterdreist (talk) 22:08, 20 October 2022 (UTC)

Also mention if rendered on any of the OSM website's layers. Jidanni (talk) 14:43, 5 September 2023 (UTC)
