Confusion with sport places

Is it possible to add the tag sport=equestrian to specify the type of equipment selling ?

Or this tag is used only for places where sport is practiced ?

I don't think shop=* is good for specifying extra details, because that is a well established tag for practicing sports, it's wiki description says . used to identify one or more sports which can be played within or on some physical feature. and should be combined with one of these (physical) tags.... So based on this and seeing shop=books, books=* I'd change your proposal to sports=* for additional details! That also matches the idea of copying a value to a key for more details. sport=* with shop=sports has several hundred uses in Europe ([1]), sports=* with shop=sports has 2 uses. Clearly the consensus is that the former can be used with shops (in the same way that religion=* can be used with schools as well as will places of worship. sport=* is an attributive tag, it really ought to be used in conjunction with one or more other tags which describe the geographical object being mapped, and because of this it's meaning must be interpreted in relation to those other tags. There is considerable value in keeping a single tag as, it allows selection of facilities relevant to particular sports. SK53 (talk) 09:47, 1 September 2014 (UTC)
I also don't think it's a problem to use sport=* to define the type of sport, just like religion=* is used to define anything's religion. --Jgpacker (talk) 14:41, 1 September 2014 (UTC)
Interesting question. My first instinct was to agree with Kepelen that this might be a bad idea. We've had other tagging discussions where we've tried to be very clear that sport=* is a useful tag for combining with leisure= / buildings etc, to indicate a place where you can do the sport. Things get more messy and unclear if we now say "oh but it might also just be a shop selling equipment for it".
However I don't like the idea of having another key "sports" for this. We shouldn't just bung on an 's' in the tag spelling in order to create a separation. So... on balance, agreeing with SK53 & Jgpacker. Data users will just have to look out for shop tags, and treat them differently I guess.
