Distribution transformers can be inside Substations

In the UK, distribution transformers can be found inside what we would call Substations. They are ground mounted (padmount) transformers from 11kv to 400v and inside a small fenced off area. They are common in urban areas where they are fed by an underground cable. It is incorrect to state that they are "Installed outside of any substation". Hello, this topic has been discussed and refined in Proposal:Transformers_classification_refinement in 2022. It was more consistent to consider only main for transformers inside substations instead of mixing main and distribution. A distribution transformer inside a substation should get main and be surrounded by a substation=minor_distribution perimeter (fenced area, building or street cabinet). We preserved distribution for standalone transformers found in countries where those places are not called substations at all. It preserves the distinction between machines and facilities and is a great help for quality assurance at worldwide level where many different situations can occur and must be supported.

Following this choice, the confusion risk between main and distribution is avoided and preserve the distribution property on the substation itself. We've done the same for traction transformers as well. Fanfouer (talk) 13:00, 15 August 2026 (UTC)
