Wikibase groups

Hi. Please stop deleting groups from wiki data items. Thanks. --Zimtschnecke (talk) 05:17, 7 March 2026 (UTC)Reply

Hi @Zimtschnecke: I'm aware this it giving you extra seemingly pointless work on reverting my changes... Sorry about that. The reason I am deleting groups from the wikidata pages is explained here (TL;DR I am trying to clean up the Mismatched group category). I haven't found a better way to get this done; it seems even applying "preffered rank" to the one group shown in the wiki page does not make a difference. It would be great if we could find a solution to this, as I spend most of my time here doing cleanup tasks. Metapod (talk) 05:43, 7 March 2026 (UTC)Reply
Imho the underlying code for groups needs to be properly amended to deal with multiple groups. Right now, the very last group entered in the data item "counts", so you just need to delete the primary group from the data item and re-add it (so its last, example), then the mismatch goes away :) --Zimtschnecke (talk) 06:19, 7 March 2026 (UTC)Reply
I updated all data items and the mismatches should all be fixed now --Zimtschnecke (talk) 06:30, 7 March 2026 (UTC)Reply
Ah! That is useful, thank you so much for the help 8)
I just found this in Data_items#Keys:
Group (P25) - The group this item belongs to. In the current model, each key belongs to just one group. In theory we could use it to attach multiple groups, changing the meaning of the "group" to something like a "label"/"meta-tag".
Until this is properly discussed I am not going to be deleting the other groups and will use that workaround, but this explains why this awkward mismatch happens. Let's hope either the code gets fixed or the P25 property dealt away completely as it seems to cause a lot of issues, especially when it comes to translations (which I am not bothering with for now)... Thanks again. --Metapod (talk) 07:00, 7 March 2026 (UTC)Reply

Changing and removing to categorization

Hi, you've recently changed and removed categories from other categories or pages, and left behind uncategorized categories: Category:Unreal Engine, Category:StreetComplete/Quests, Category:Pa:ਤੱਤ. Please, can you tell me, what is the reason or plan with that? --Chris2map (talk) 16:35, 10 March 2026 (UTC)Reply

Hi @Chris2map, this was an effort to optimize category categorization, specifically assigning just one specific category to each to prevent loops or presence of a category in both parent and subcategories... The ones you mentioned were mistakes I made in the process; Unreal Engine should be returned to its previous positions; Streetcomplete/quests was a category I created but decided to rename to "Streetcomplete Quests"; "Pa:ਤੱਤ." is an empty category, but I'll return it to "Category:Elements/translations" Metapod (talk) 18:10, 10 March 2026 (UTC)Reply
