Somalia Roads Import

The roads data for Somalia in the OSM XML files below comes from MadMappers, an African mapping forum, and was donated to OpenStreetMap by UN FAO Somalia Water and Land Information Management to help us assist other humanitarian organizations responding to the drought and famine crisis there. We have full permission to incorporate the dataset into OSM.

The dataset covers all of Somalia, and is pretty detailed. Each of the files below comprises a rectangular geographic region, with ~1,050 ways per file. The data has been cleaned up, to minimize topological errors, and converted to OSM format. However, the data does still have issues in some places, such as occasional doubled/overlapping roads. Also, these files still need to be merged in with the data that's already in OSM.

We need volunteers! Check a file out by editing this page, and adding your username in the corresponding row. Download the file, load it into JOSM, download the OSM data, and validate. Check the data against any available imagery. Fix any errors. When everything looks good, upload to OSM and repeat. Please use the tag "source=MadMappers-SOM-2008-01" on the changeset when uploading, in case we need to find them later. More detailed walk-through of the steps involved

Problems Detected

so_roads.sbjb8y.osm: User seems to have had problems uploading but didn't quite understand what was going on and tried multiple times. The result left thousands of empty nodes in the database in addition to massively duplicated ways (often 3 deep). In addition there doesn't seem to have been any checking against existing data so it duplicates ways uploaded by other users. Changesets involved: 9103194, 9094623, 9097079 (maybe another one too?) - cleanup done (2011-08-24)
