Summary

Reasoning

Vending machines do appear more and more in very different kinds. As they are increasingly a part of everybody’s life, there is also a need to bring them on maps or in to routing devices. In most cases there should also be given a hint to the type of goods the machine offers.

Some people already started to map vending machines, to coordinate some of there work this proposal is needed.

How to Map

just place a node at right place. Tag it as amenity=vending_machine for the type of goods there should be a vending=foo given. For example:

  • public_transport_tickets
  • public_transport_plans
  • parking_tickets
  • foot
  • drinks
  • sweets
  • cigarettes
  • photos
  • animal_food
  • news_papers
  • toys
  • stamps
  • SIM-cards
  • telephone_vouchers
  • vouchers
  • condoms
  • tampons
  • excrement_bags
  • ...

more information can be given by adding a ref=bar if the machine has a given number.

Quit useful could also be to give a operator, especially if we map transport ticket selling machines.

In some cases also the possible payment methods payment:foo=yes/no could be of good help, like:

  • coins
  • notes
  • electronic_purses (like Geldkarte in Germany)
  • debit_cards (like maestro)
  • credit_cards
  • account_cards (Account or loyalty cards)
  • ....

Example & Description

a machine for bus and tram tickets:

amenity=vending_machine

vending=public_transport_tickets

operator=BVG

ref=455

payment:coins=yes

payment:notes=yes

a machine selling tickets for parking:

Vending machine parking tickets.jpg

amenity=vending_machine

vending=parking_tickets

payment:coins=yes

payment:notes=yes

a stamp selling machine:

Jt vending machine stamps deu.jpg

amenity=vending_machine

vending=stamps

operator=Deutsche Post AG

simple condoms selling point:

amenity=vending_machine

vending=condoms

simple selling point for dog-excrement-bags (like Spender für Hundekot-Tüten in German):

Dog excrement bags.jpg

amenity=vending_machine

vending=excrement_bags

payment:none=yes

operator=provider

Possible icon: Dog-excrement-bag-icon.png

simple cigaretts selling machine:

Vending machine cigarettes.jpg

amenity=vending_machine

vending=cigarettes

In Otherwise Covered Locations

Added because of an idea in the the discussion.

In the case that a vending machine is inside of an otherwise covered location, like a subway station or a pub, we could add a tag to that location like:

amenity=pub

vending_machine=condoms

In that case it would not make sense to give more information as this could lead to problems of assignment of that data as the user might mix them up with the location itself.

Alternate Name Sugestions?

Do not know about any.

Instead of vending=foo there is the seldom type=foo or vending_product=foo used.

  • I oppose this proposal I oppose this proposal. I think further limitations are needed on this for it to useable. Tagging road side machines for tickets in large car parks, for example, is a great idea, but tagging vending machines inside pubs is overkill. --Salkunh 10:12, 11 September 2008 (UTC)
  • I approve this proposal I approve this proposal. I prefer "vending_machine:product", because this shows more clearly which tag the parameter belongs to. --Birgit Nietsch 10:15, 11 September 2008 (UTC)
  • I oppose this proposal I oppose this proposal. I think this will cause too much tag soup, type is too generic and needs rethinking along with the concept of which machines should be tagged -- Nik_Doof 10:16, 11 September 2008 (UTC)

  • I oppose this proposal I oppose this proposal. If we are going to use vending_machine=foo in buildings, surely we should just use it everywhere and keep it simple? This also deals with the issue of type=foo being too generic. I also find the idea of a ticket machine in a station tagged as a vending machine strange, but I suppose it is very logical really. • I oppose this proposal I oppose this proposal. Not a useful landmark, not a useful point of reference for navigation, rarely appear on their own. Chriscf 12:36, 11 September 2008 (UTC)

  • I oppose this proposal I oppose this proposal. "type=" should not be used. Tagging sweet- and condom-machines makes no sense, the proposal should say what should be tagged and what not! Change proposal and vote again! --Phobie 14:08, 11 September 2008 (UTC)

  • I oppose this proposal I oppose this proposal. This proposal needs rethinking. Especially it seems weird that a tagging scheme that could be used for every case is only used for machines in buildings, see vote of Daveemtb. --Tordanik 09:27, 13 September 2008 (UTC)
  • I oppose this proposal I oppose this proposal. I don't like having both amenity=vending_machinge and vending_machine=foo. I would support vending_machine=foo, extra information can be given using vending_machine:payment_method=coins. --Jttt 13:53, 13 September 2008 (UTC)

  • I oppose this proposal I oppose this proposal. Like xylome I propose the vending_machine:type thing. Even though I don't like this why of tagging not this much but it is allready in use like with recycling (which can actually be compared to this tag if you talk about the way of usage and tagging). So to make it more consistend to other features I also propose to use it like this "amenity=vending_machine", "vending_machine:type=yes"
