Public Transport=platform

Because there are plenty of examples where a platform is used for buses, trams and trains at the same time this feature has been complemented by public_transport=platform. For compatibility reasons most mappers still use railway=platform in conjunction with the new tag.

How to Map

Most simple would be railway=platform and drawn as a way.

Giving more information like a ref=* for the platform or track number could be a valuable information

railway=platform

name=5

name=5;6

ref=5

ref=5;6

Any other kind of information like surface=*, width=* and so on might be helpful. Also interesting on some places could be access=* or if some needs a special ticket.

Example:

railway=platform

ref=6

surface=paved

width=5

...=...

For more detail, platforms (especially wider ones) can also be mapped as Area areas by adding area=yes.

It has been suggested that closed ways with railway=platform, but without area=yes, should also be treated as areas because ring-shaped railway platforms are unlikely to occur in reality. But adding area=yes is still necessary for correct rendering on the osm2pgsql based styles because of the problematic area semantics of OSM (technical details).

For platforms used in bus stations or by non rail services highway=platform should be used.

But a platform is always clearly distinguishable from other ways and mostly separated. So e.g. a sidewalk with a tram-stop is not a platform.

If there are more then one platform in one location, a relation could be used to "bind" them together. See Approved Public Transport Schema for more information.
