public_transport=platform

Because there are plenty of examples where a platform is used for buses and trams this feature has been replaced by public_transport=platform.

How to Map

Most simple would be railway=platform and drawn as a way.

Giving more information like a ref for the platform or track number could be a valuable information

railway=platform

name=5 (renders in mapnik)

name=5;6

ref=5 (does not display in mapnik)

ref=5;6

Any other kind of information like surface, width and so on might be helpful. Also interesting on some places could be access= or if some needs a special ticket.

Example:

railway=platform

ref=6

surface=paved

width=5

...=...

Platforms (especially wider ones) can also be mapped as areas for better rendering results. A closed way should also be tagged as

area=yes

For platforms used in bus stations or by non rail services

highway=platform

should be used.

But a platform is always clearly distinguishable from other ways and mostly separated. So e.g. a sidewalk with a tram-stop is not a platform.

If there are more then one platform in one location, a relation could be used to "bind" them together. See Proposed_features/unified_stoparea
