11 Distribution themes of CanVec

AUTHORS NOTE: I have the full chart on an OpenOffice Spreadsheet, this essentially organizing the CanVec Feature catalogue, in a chart form. The purpose of this excercise is to identify the OSM tags which should be placed on the imported data. I will show the cross-reference back to the GeoBase data. Fortunately, the PDF Feature catalogue has a listing of what features are listed in GeoBase, making the work easy. --acrosscanadatrails 23:51, 7 January 2009 (UTC) --acrosscanadatrails 22:51, 21 November 2009 (UTC) Can These charts now be removed, since all the information is on the GoogleDocs Chart?

The 90 Topographical entities are further organized into 11 distribution themes, each with it's on ID number.

Code Theme Definition Status Note
BS CanVec: Buildings and structures (BS)
EN Talk:CanVec: Energy (EN)
FO CanVec: Relief and landforms (FO)
HD CanVec: Hydrography (HD) Checked by jeanseb on march 4, 2009 Special processing will be needed for the islands features. See this page for more information : http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Relations/Multipolygon

Streams (and single-way rivers?) need work -- they have nodes for labels, and the ways don't have the names tagged. The name nodes litter the map with labels at pretty high zooms (see http://www.openstreetmap.org/?lat=49.075&lon=-123.831&zoom=9&layers=B000FTFT) -- Austin Henry
Thats because it's listed as a 'place=town', thanks for the Bug report :) --acrosscanadatrails 05:42, 21 June 2009 (UTC)

CODE 1234567 canvec:source CanVec_Feature_Catalogue_Edition_1_0_2.pdf Disapproved --acrosscanadatrails 00:49, 26 June 2009 (UTC) Because the tag is sredundent, the pdf source reference can be found on the wiki, so there is no need to mention it in the OSM Database
CODE 2420031 canvec:entity Trail - ( Sentier ) Disapproved --acrosscanadatrails 00:49, 26 June 2009 (UTC) The tag is redundant, because it can be found on the wiki chart, and cross references with the canvec:CODE tag
CODE 2420031 canvec:entity_description A narrow path or route suitable for walking; hiking; or bicycling. Disapproved --acrosscanadatrails 00:49, 26 June 2009 (UTC) The description is not needed because it can be found on the wiki, and cross referenced with the canvec:CODE tag.
CODE 2420031 canvec:value Portage - ( Portage ) Disapproved --acrosscanadatrails 00:49, 26 June 2009 (UTC) The value is not needed because it can be found on the wiki, and cross referenced with the canvec:CODE tag. And the regular OSM tag shows the 'best match available'.
CODE 2420031 canvec:value_description A trail used by canoeists to bypass an unnavigable portion of

a watercourse or to go from one watercourse to another.

Disapproved --acrosscanadatrails 00:49, 26 June 2009 (UTC) The description is not needed because it can be found on the wiki, and cross referenced with the canvec:CODE tag.
CODE 2420031 highway path Approved --acrosscanadatrails 20:52, 19 June 2009 (UTC) Just An example, the charts list the current tags used. Because 'code' might not be approved, it might prove difficult to change the tags after import (search for particular tags), where errors in the defult tagging were found.
VALDATE 1989 canvec:VALDATE 1989 Disapproved --acrosscanadatrails 20:52, 19 June 2009 (UTC) Could also proved useful, as an indication of how accurate the data is.
However, not approved because the information can be validated with physical GPS Tracks, and the assumption is that it's the most recient data available. Until proven otherwise (with physical observation). If needed, this information can be sourced in the origional dataset. Also, all of the tags that have been dis-approived, are still available when running the canvec2osm script in the 'Metadata' folder.
PROVIDER 1 canvec:PROVIDER other Disapproved --acrosscanadatrails 00:49, 26 June 2009 (UTC) The tag is redundant, although partially useful, the default is that it's from the best available data (regardless of the government agency who submitted the data to canvec)
PROVIDER 2 canvec:PROVIDER federal Disapproved --acrosscanadatrails 00:49, 26 June 2009 (UTC) The tag is redundant, although partially useful, the default is that it's from the best available data (regardless of the government agency who submitted the data to canvec)
PROVIDER 3 canvec:PROVIDER provincial_territorial Disapproved --acrosscanadatrails 00:49, 26 June 2009 (UTC) The tag is redundant, although partially useful, the default is that it's from the best available data (regardless of the government agency who submitted the data to canvec)
PROVIDER 4 canvec:PROVIDER municipal Disapproved --acrosscanadatrails 00:49, 26 June 2009 (UTC) The tag is redundant, although partially useful, the default is that it's from the best available data (regardless of the government agency who submitted the data to canvec)
ID 35466b119af747b98cd41e34bb6474af canvec:UUID 35466b119af747b98cd41e34bb6474af Approved --acrosscanadatrails 20:52, 19 June 2009 (UTC) Because this source is only useful for working within the canvec database, having it listed here is about as useful as the canvec database listing OSM way ID's.
--acrosscanadatrails 00:49, 26 June 2009 (UTC)However, this is approved because it is standard to include this exact refrence to each unique node/way/polygon which is imported. Just as OSM has a unique ID for each node/way/polygon in the system.
DATANAME 030M03 canvec:datasetName 030M03 Disapproved --acrosscanadatrails 00:49, 26 June 2009 (UTC) Although useful in finding the data from the source, for the purpose of OSM Database, only the user who is importing the data would have use for the tag. The Polygon Boundary file can be opened, in the canvec2osm 'extra' folder which shows the dataset name. Also, cross referencing using the geogratis slippy-map is easy enough todo.
ACCURACY 10 canvec:Planimetric Accuracy (CMAS) 10 Dissaproved --acrosscanadatrails 20:52, 19 June 2009 (UTC) Just as GPS Accuract itn't retained in the OSM database, this tag could prove useful for deciding what feature is more accurate. CanVec data can be 10-20 meters off, where OSM data can be 4 meters accurate.
--acrosscanadatrails 01:00, 26 June 2009 (UTC) This is disaproved because, it adds unneeded redundency. when working on the area and are unsure of the acuracy, using the GPS trace layer would help, as more tracks indicate better accuracy. And if the tracks were yours, it's easier. The defult is that the accuracy is from the best available source, and accurate to that degree. When physically working in the area, it's always best to have GPS Tracks to back it up.
