DiscoverTrail is a mobile and tablet application for iOS and Android designed specifically for hiking. It functions as both an online and offline outdoor map and route planner. By utilizing OpenStreetMap data, the app delivers detailed topographic maps that highlight marked hiking trails, offer reliable outdoor navigation, and display relevant points of interest (POIs).

Features

Map Viewing & Rendering

• Topographic Maps: Detailed terrain rendering including elevation contour lines and hill shading.
• Hiking Trails Highlighting: Prominent rendering of marked hiking and walking trails directly extracted from OSM route relations ( route=hiking, route=foot).
• Color-Coded Trails: Displays trails matching their real-world waymark colors where available in OSM data (via osmc:symbol=* or colour=* tags).
• Interactive Trail Details: Users can tap on any marked hiking trail on the map to highlight its complete geometry and view specific data, such as its official name, total distance and real-world waymark symbol (osmc:symbol=*).
• Offline Maps: Users can download map tiles for specific regions to use entirely offline without cellular coverage.

Route Planning & Navigation

• Route Creation: Allows users to plan routes by dropping pins on the map.
• Time & Distance Estimation: Automatically calculates route distance, elevation gain/loss, estimated hiking times and elevation profile.
• GPS Tracking: Real-time location rendering on the map, along with current altitude, compass bearing and accuracy.
• Save Planned Routes: Allows users to save and manage their created routes within the app for future trips, as well as compile a personal map of their completed hikes.
• Remaining Route Metrics: Allows users to check the remaining distance, estimated time, and elevation profile from any selected point along the planned route or during navigation.
• Route Sharing & Embedding: Users can share their planned routes via a direct link or generate an embeddable interactive map for use on external websites and blogs.
• Custom Walking Pace: Allows users to manually set their average walking speed to calculate personalized and accurate estimated completion times for their routes.

Points of Interest (POIs)

• Hiker-Specific Amenities: Highlights essential outdoor POIs extracted from OSM, such as:
  • Mountain huts and shelters (tourism=alpine_hut, tourism=wilderness_hut, amenity=shelter)
  • Natural landmarks like peaks (natural=peak) and viewpoints (tourism=viewpoint)
  • Drinking water sources (amenity=drinking_water or natural=spring)
  • Trailheads and parking lots (amenity=parking)
• Nearby search: Locate nearby drinking water sources, accommodations, restaurants, and shops.
• POI Details: Provides practical information for POIs, such as contact information.
• Bookmarks: Enables users to save specific Points of Interest for quick reference directly on the map.
