Foundation/Local Chapters/United States/Pedestrian Working Group
Announced in February 2024, the Pedestrian Working Group, organized by OpenStreetMap U.S., is composed of volunteers who are collaborating to develop guidelines and tools for detailed pedestrian infrastructure mapping.
Get Involved!
The Pedestrian Working Group meets via Zoom on every third Tuesday of the month from 3:00 PM - 4:00 PM ET (convert). To join those meetings, fill out this OSM US Working Group registration form. Copies of the agendas for each meeting are available at PWG Meetings.
Ongoing discussion also happens on the OSM US Slack. Relevant channels include #sidewalks, and the private channel for the Pedestrian Working Group.
PWG Guide
The PWG Guide walks through the same tiered system and mapping guidelines in a quick-start format, aimed at people who are newer to pedestrian infrastructure mapping rather than at those needing the full tagging reference (like the PWG Schema).
Latest Release
The latest release of the PWG Guide is available at Foundation/Local_Chapters/United_States/Pedestrian_Working_Group/Guide or through the redirect PWG Guide.
Draft Page
The Draft page, which functions as a collaborative pre-release workspace for the upcoming version, is available at Draft:Foundation/Local_Chapters/United_States/Pedestrian_Working_Group/Guide or through the redirect PWG Guide Draft.
The corresponding Discussion page for the Draft page, which is used for staging updates and opening discussions on issues and suggestions, is available at Talk:Draft:Foundation/Local_Chapters/United_States/Pedestrian_Working_Group/Guide or through the redirect PWG Guide Talk.
The Draft page may be compared to the latest release to view upcoming changes at Compare: PWG Guide and PWG Guide Draft.
Versioned Snapshots
For each release of the PWG Guide, versioned snapshot subpages are created:
- Foundation/Local_Chapters/United_States/Pedestrian_Working_Group/Guide/1.0.1
- Foundation/Local_Chapters/United_States/Pedestrian_Working_Group/Guide/1.0.0
- Foundation/Local_Chapters/United_States/Pedestrian_Working_Group/Guide/1.0.0-beta
PWG Schema
A tagging schema for pedestrian infrastructure mapping developed by the Pedestrian Working Group. It covers sidewalks, crossings, curbs, islands, and access aisles, using a tiered system (Bronze, Silver, Gold, Diamond) that indicates which tags and features are needed for different use cases and levels of imagery/survey quality.
Latest Release
The latest release of the PWG Schema is available at Foundation/Local_Chapters/United_States/Pedestrian_Working_Group/Schema or through the redirect PWG Schema.
Draft Page
The Draft page, which functions as a collaborative pre-release workspace for the upcoming version, is available at Draft:Foundation/Local_Chapters/United_States/Pedestrian_Working_Group/Schema or through the redirect PWG Schema Draft.
The corresponding Discussion page for the Draft page, which is used for staging updates and opening discussions on issues and suggestions, is available at Talk:Draft:Foundation/Local_Chapters/United_States/Pedestrian_Working_Group/Schema or through the redirect PWG Schema Talk.
The Draft page may be compared to the main page to view upcoming changes at Compare: PWG Schema and PWG Schema Draft.

Wiki Templates
The following OSM Wiki templates are maintained in order to direct edits to the appropriate Talk and Draft pages and to propagate links and version history updates to PWG-related OSM Wiki pages:
Tools
Tools to assist with pedestrian infrastructure mapping are being developed, such as:
- A JOSM preset for tagging features such as sidewalks, crossings, and curbs.
- A JOSM plugin for adding sidewalks that can rapidly get pedestrian infrastructure to Bronze level
- Visualizations using Overpass Ultra for curb types, tactile paving, sidewalk tagging on roadways along with GA_Kevin's PWG tier visualizer.
- Speedwalk, a web app to assess tagging consistency and fix some types of errors.
