A key meant to describe the conditions of a trail as it relates to a Dirt_Bike. It is not a difficulty rating, as "difficulty" changes depending on the rider skill level and the type of motor bike being ridden.

Applies to

How to map

The main key to be used is dirtbike:scale=0 to 6. This shall be used for classifying the level of conditions of a trail.

This is an attribute that should be placed on a WAY, though there may be times when it applies to a single point as well. It is acceptable to either label an entire track as a given dirtbike:scale values or break the track into parts with individual dirtbike:scale values.

It is a 0-6 scale, much like key:mtb:scale. Note that the scale is geared towards trail conditions, NOT bike capability or rider capability. As the scale is defined, it should be possible to send out someone completely unacquainted with riding and get a roughly correct estimate.

Values

Tag Description Example Picture Example video
dirtbike:scale=0 Packed dirt or gravel Very mild (if any) elevation changes and few changes in trail composition. No large "baby head" rocks, roots, or other obstacles. Suitable for beginning riders who are familiar with the basic controls and functions of a dirt bike or any motorcycle. This type of trail is navigable by any 4 wheeled vehicle with regular road-going ground clearances.

dirtbike:scale=1 Loose dirt or gravel, possibly well packed sand. Completely avoidable obstacles such as small rocks. Not much need for suspension travel at slow speeds. Ground clearance for a standard car would be important.

dirtbike:scale=2 Obstacles such as large rocks and stones. Soil is often loose. Steps are expected. Wider hairpin turns, steepness of up to 70%. Requires some advanced riding skills. Only very skilled riders can go uphill on this.

dirtbike:scale=3 Erosion control berms and occasional minor ruts. Some obstacles, but nothing that can't be avoided. Possible steep but smooth sections. Bumpy water crossings with a clear line that are generally no more than a foot deep that may require some skill to power across. Modified Jeeps and vehicles devoted to off road would be the only vehicles with 4 wheels possible.

dirtbike:scale=4 Heavily rutted, with lots of obstacles such as rocks, shelves, roots. Possible steep sections where traction can be a problem. Mud and sand may come into play regularly as well. Possibly single track, or at least with a steep bank off the edge of the trail. 4 wheeled automobiles likely a very rare site, and only slow rock-crawling offroaders at that.

dirtbike:scale=5 Steep. With many and frequent unavoidable small, medium and large rocks, roots, and other obstacles. You can't slowly trail ride this, as your momentum is an absolute essential due to the poor traction offered by the ground composition.

dirtbike:scale=6 The very hardest class of passable trails. Also poses a danger to life and limb. Not survivable except by very experienced riders on the most dirt oriented of motorcycles.
