Status: de facto

The amount of space between the cycleway and the car lanes. This tag can only be used when the cycleway is represented by a tag on the main road: cycleway=track/lane/opposite_track/opposite_lane (so not when it's drawn separately as a highway=cycleway). If no unit is given, the default is meters.

Use cycleway:right:buffer=* and/or cycleway:left:buffer=* to tag different buffers on either side of the road. cycleway:both:buffer=* is used an order of magnitude more often than cycleway:buffer=* to tag both sides of the road.

Typical values

  • no – no space between cyclists and motorists.
  • yes – space exists between cyclists and motorists.

A numeric value is sometimes used to describe how wide the buffer is, but current usage overwhelmingly favors yes and no over numeric values.[1]
