To indicate if the fireplace or BBQ has a grate (also known as a cooking grate or cooking grid) or not.

How to map

Use grate=yes if a feature has a grate, or grate=no if not.

Since grate=* is a non-physical tag, it should be combined with top-level tags:

  • leisure=firepit - A fire ring or fire pit, often at a campsite or picnic site.
  • amenity=bbq - A permanently built place for having a BBQ. It is unclear whether a bbq without a grate is still an amenity=bbq.

Similar tags

  • bbq=* - Specifies whether a barbecue grill is available at a feature.
  • bbq=bring_your_own / bring_own_bbq=yes for places designated for grilling, often with dedicated infrastructure but without bbq itself that needs to be brought by users.
  • firepit=* - Specifies if a feature has a dedicated place to hold an open fire.
  • fireplace=* - Availability of a fireplace: a framed opening in a chimney made to hold an open fire
  • amenity=baking_oven - A public place that can be used for baking bread.
  • oven=* - To specify a type of oven power source.
  • amenity=cook_stove - A cooker or kitchen stove which remains in one place.
  • stove=* - Specifies whether or not a kitchen stove is present at a feature.
