Status: in use

A key to indicate the date when the related event happened. Use in combination with historic=*.

For plaques, the event commemorated would have its date added with this key. To indicate when a plaque was installed, use start_date=*.

For the date when a feature was built or installed at its presented location, use construction_date=* or start_date=*.

Note: date=* is also suggested for this use, but its actual use is inconsistent and deprecating is debated.

Formatting

Example formats: YYYY (year), YYYY-MM-DD (date), YYYY;YYYY (two years, combined with semicolon) YYYY..YYYY (time period, combined with two dots)

Dates use the ISO 8601 system, which is based on the Gregorian calendar.

Caution: ISO8601 uses the format YYYY-MM-DD, not the North American model of MM-DD-YYYY

Examples:
1910-03-31
for where the full date is known, using the format YYYY-MM-DD
1910
where the year is known, but no more
0897 (for 897 AD)
1848-07
where the year and month are known

For centuries, use the C-notation.

Example:
historic:date=C18
date in the 18th century (years 1701 to 1800)

To indicate a time period, use ".." between the beginning and the end.

Example:
1910..1912
years 1910 to 1912

To indicate several, separate dates, use ";" between the dates.

Examples:
1901;1926
year 1901 and year 1926
1910-01-01;1911-12-31
for 1 January 1910 and 31 December 1911

  • historic:date=1940/1945🔎 ‒ use ".." or ";" depending on the use, not "/". Correct value would be "1940..1945" or "1940;1945".
