Definition
The key impromptu=* is a qualifying key and means that physical infrastructure is minimal. For example, an impromptu camping location is a camping location that is not an established camping site or an informal camping site. It offers no camping services like drinking water, toilets and showers although such facilities may be available in the neighbourhood. Usually no fee is charged.
Campsites that are not impromptu are:
- Established campings: have as main activity to provide camping facilities for a fee;
- Informal campings: usually have a main activity related to camping (hotel, hostel, motel, chalets) and provide facilities for campers as a side activity at a fee. They may have separate facilities for campers (like a separate toilet section), allow campers to use shared facilities (typical in a hostel) or hand out a room key for use of toilet and shower.

Rationale
Impromptu campings are important for overlanders. Overlanders are people who travel for a longer period (at least a few months) usually with their own vehicles (mainly 4WD's, trucks and motorcycles) and cover a long distance, often in developing countries. Examples are Amsterdam to Capetown, Alaska to Tierra del Fuego and London to Delhi. Because many of the countries they pass have no or few official campings they need alternative camping locations. Hikers may be satisfied with backcountry=* campings, for overlanders this is insufficient.
Examples of impromptu campings used by overlanders are:
- Police station or mission post: no facilities, but shelter is offered
- Public beach: public toilet and beach shower can be used
- Guarded city park: shelter and a public toilet are offered
- Isolated site in the desert: no facilities, chosen for its beauty
- Meadow next to an African village: shelter offered by the village community
