This key is used for multiple unrelated purposes:

  • In bus stops, to indicate the existence and type of a bus stop pole
  • In power feature, to indicate the function of a feature installed on a power pole

For public transport stops, especially in bus stops, this tag is used to describe whether public transport stop has pole to indicate its position or not. In some cities, the existence of shelter alone deemed enough to indicate that the place is used for waiting and boarding public transport. Some stops does not even have any pole and shelter, so passengers rely on local knowledge or digital information.

How to map

Public transport

Poles at public transport stops can be categorized using the tags listed below. Each country or region may use a different classification system.

Value Element Comment Photo
traffic_sign node Basic type of bus stop pole. It has a rectangular or circular sign mounted at the top of the pole, usually a blue sign with a bus icon. Route information boards or timetables may also be attached below, positioned at approximately eye level for passengers.

This type of pole is generally part of a region’s traffic sign regulations. Combine this tag with traffic_sign=* to specify which traffic sign is shown.

flag node Bus stop signage with a route information board or stop identifier attached near the top, on the side of the pole. Route information boards or timetables may also be attached below, positioned at approximately eye level for passengers. This type often emphasizes passenger information rather than traffic regulation.
totem node Large vertical information structures designed for visibility and orientation. Totems often include route diagrams, maps, timetables, or branding. This type of stop marker function as wayfinding elements rather than simple stop markers.
yes node Indicates the presence of a pole in the stop area. Please provide more specific tagging.

This value can also be used for simple information pole that is too small to be considered as totem or flag.

no node A bus stop without a pole. Buses stop at this location regardless of whether there are any physical markers, such as a shelter.

Using this value to tag non-existent or purely virtual stops (for example, to represent hail-and-ride services) is discouraged. Please ensure that the location represents a notable, real-world stopping point before tagging it with highway=bus_stop. For hail and ride tagging, please refer to this proposal
