Map Cup Asia Pacific 2026 is a region-wide, friendly OpenStreetMap mapping challenge running from 1st July to 31 July 2026. It is open to all countries, OSM community groups, and individual contributors across the Asia and Oceania regions, from first-time contributors to experienced mappers, validators, community leaders, students, employees, and retired individuals.

The event brings the Asia Pacific community together where collaboration meets competition, strengthening connections, empowering contributors, and improving the completeness, accuracy, and freshness of OpenStreetMap across the region. It is inspired by the Africa Map Cup.

Objective

"To unite OpenStreetMap communities across the Asia Pacific region in a friendly mapping competition that improves map quality, strengthens regional collaboration, and empowers contributors to create more complete, accurate, and up-to-date OSM data."

Three pillars

The Map Cup is designed around three core pillars to avoid a pure "edit-count race" and to create lasting value for both the map and the participating communities:

🏆 Friendly Competition: Encourage participation through healthy competition while maintaining the collaborative spirit of OpenStreetMap.

🤝 Community Collaboration: Strengthen relationships between OSM communities, organizations, universities, and individual contributors across APAC.

🗺️ Data Quality: Focus on improving the completeness, accuracy, and usability of OpenStreetMap data through quality-focused mapping and validation.

Supporting goals

1. Data improvement

  • Enhance the quality and completeness of OpenStreetMap data across Asia Pacific.
  • Improve priority datasets such as roads, buildings, POIs, land use, and addresses.
  • Encourage validation and quality-focused mapping practices.

2. Community building

  • Bring together OSM communities, organisations, universities, and individual contributors from across the region.
  • Foster knowledge sharing and cross-community collaboration.
  • Create opportunities for experienced mappers to mentor newcomers.

3. Contributor growth

  • Attract new contributors and help them become active long-term mappers.
  • Provide a structured and engaging environment for learning OSM editing.
  • Recognise and celebrate contributions from both individuals and communities.

4. Regional impact

  • Support local mapping needs while contributing to a stronger Asia Pacific map database.
  • Demonstrate the collective impact of the region through measurable mapping outcomes.
  • Build a sustainable annual event that becomes a flagship OSM activity for Asia Pacific.

Training and onboarding sessions

Live training and onboarding sessions help new contributors get started and give experienced mappers refreshers on tools and quality practices. Sessions are scheduled across regional time zones so every sub-region can join at a convenient local time.

Topics typically include: getting started with iD and JOSM, using the Tasking Manager, validation practices, and good tagging.

Weekly cadence

To keep momentum throughout July:

  • Weekly leaderboard updates — Country Leads share statistics with their OSM communities.
  • Highlight contributors — celebrate progress and standout work each week.
  • Stay active — respond to questions and encourage communities.
