Proposal

Deprecate crossing=zebra in favor of crossing=uncontrolled or crossing=marked (with crossing_ref=zebra where appropriate).

Rationale

Problems with Presets

The usage of crossing=zebra increased once ID added this as its default preset for a crosswalk. At that point, the name for this preset was (in English) "crosswalk". Today, it remains as an unsearchable preset with the name "marked crosswalk" in American English, and "Marked Crossing" in British English.
