Proposal

The tag is supposed to enable proper mapping of (parts of) buildings dedicated to funeral services, that may or may not be religious, often within a cemetery or linked to one.

Rationale

In Germany, many cemeteries have so-called Trauerhallen or Feierhallen where funeral services are held. If the cemetery is a religious one (even if multifaith), the building can easily be tagged as place of worship (even if it may occasionally be used for non-religious ceremonies as well), but on cemeteries that are neutral as to religion or belief, these buildings are as a matter of principle open to all kinds of funeral ceremonies, be they conducted by a minister of the gospel, a representative of a secular organisation, a commercial speaker or ad hoc by a member of the family. Currently they are often tagged as place of worship, sometimes with religion=multifaith for lack of a better alternative, all the more so as the German translation Andachtsstätte is quite okay, but they aren't really places of worship, just places that are sometimes used for worshipping (religious services), but with locally varying frenquency (from almost always to very seldomly).

Funeral directors often have such rooms in other countries (like France or Belgium, funérarium) and increasingly in Germany. Such rooms are also regularly found in crematoria. It is suggested not to use the tag funeral_hall, if the room is clearly ancillary to either a funeral directors shop or a crematorium.

It should be noted that a funeral hall is also distinct from a mortuary (which is there to store corpses until their burial).

The tag "funeral_hall" has already occasionally been used (see here and here).

Apart from being very common on German cemeteries, such buildings exist on some cemeteries in the Netherlands and France and are currently being promoted by the regional government of Brussels. It can safely be assumed that there are examples in other countries as well.

I haven't included it, because I simply don't see what the typical architecture is that makes a building a funeral hall independently of its actual usage (thus I can't justify a tag building=funeral_hall). Note that there are some technically/de iure religiously neutral cemeteries with funeral hall that is used universally/typically as place of worship. My understanding is that we map what is and not what is legally supposed to be. In that sense, I think there will always be a grey area where only the individual mapper with local knowledge will be able to decide which way it should go. Vollis (talk) 17:04, 3 September 2020 (UTC)

• I approve this proposal. I think the building=* is not needed for a funeral place. In my hometown we used to have a large funeral area there have several building for different religion like Christian Buddhism and folk beliefs, but I have some confusion that whether I should add the tag on the whole "hall" area or I should mark it on every "hall" like Jingxing Hall and 2nd Hall each by each? --tntchn ^talk 06:40, 4 September 2020 (UTC)

If some of the halls are reserved to one or more religions, then I would tag them "place of worship" (with the relevant religion/denomination), the others "funeral hall".
